Fostering in Merthyr Tydfil

Foster care in Merthyr Tydfil

Are you thinking of fostering a child or a young person in Merthyr Tydfil?

Located just 24 miles outside of Cardiff, with excellent connection to some of the major roads which run across Wales and connect Wales to its neighbouring county of England, it’s not hard to see why Merthyr Tydfil has become a place of great economic opportunity and expansion.

As well as its growing footprint in the world of business, which makes it popular with commuters and young people looking to expand on their future potential and opportunity, Merthyr Tydfil is also an incredibly beautiful part of Wales with a portion of the county lying inside the boundary of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This, combined with the heritage sites and vast areas of countryside, makes Merthyr Tydfil an exciting place for people of all ages to call home.

And that’s not all. The county boasts a total of 22 primary schools and 4 secondary schools, support from the government for those looking to boost their employability and skills development for the benefit of their career, and a wide range of attractions and cultural experiences which encourage young people to learn about and understand the significance of local and widespread history.

For the thousands of children who move into foster care and foster placements every year, Welsh counties like Merthyr Tydfil offer a chance for those young people to experience the benefits of a balanced lifestyle. With so many children in care coming from major cities or overseas locations, the lifestyle of a rural setting like Merthyr Tydfil, paired with the close proximity and connection with larger towns and industrial sites, opens up the potential for young people to develop new skills and build connections which allow them to access a better future.

But we can’t offer children and teenagers placements in foster care without the support of people like you. When you become a foster carer with Calon Cymru, you offer more than a room to a child in need. You offer a beacon of hope, armed with the support, guidance, and love that young people need to thrive.

This is Yvonne and Brian’s story.

For Yvonne and Brian, fostering is about recognising the individual and unique perspectives, fears, and attributes of each child they take in – no matter how long term the placement may be.

To do this, and to celebrate every foster placement they have had over the last 18 years with Calon Cymru Fostering, Yvonne and Brian have a ‘Family Tree’ in their home every Christmas – giving the children in their care the chance to choose or make a decoration which is theirs to add to the tree. By creating an ongoing tradition which unites their placements both past, present, and future, young people are allowed to feel like a part of something magical – and the couple have a beautiful way of celebrating every child who has walked through their door.
