Colin and Nicole have been fostering with Calon Cymru for over 8 years now, since their daughter recommended us to them. They ran 2 successful property companies, before deciding to become Foster Carers. They have been able to continue running one of their companies alongside fostering. Here, Colin talks about “A”, who is currently in placement with them.
“We’ve recently been supporting A with completing his life story work.* We’ve been pleasantly surprised and the positive change in his behaviour since we started. Christmas can be a hard time for children who aren’t able to live with their birth families.
Although now 11, A came home last week from school and stated that there was no Santa. The following morning, he handed us an envelope with a letter to Santa asking for the things that he would like him to bring (hedging his bets!).
We don’t have a chimney, so A always makes sure that we put out the magic key that opens the front door every Christmas Eve (it only works for Santa) and leave out a drink for Santa and carrots for his reindeer.
A has recently taken an interest in cooking, and to support this interest we will be encouraging him to help with the Christmas dinner this year, although he is not at all keen on the resulting washing up!”
Colin says he often speaks to people that say they would love to foster, but are reluctant to take the next step. His advice for them would be “go for it as the rewards far outweigh the negatives. You can make a difference, not only in a child’s life, but also in your own!”
*Life story work is undertaken with all our fostered children, our Foster Carers are provided with support and training. It helps children who are no longer living with their birth family to understand their early years and reconcile that with their present, in order to have a positive future.
