Celebrating 20 Years of Fostering: Lesley’s Journey

At Calon Cymru Fostering, we love sharing stories from our wonderful team of foster carers and celebrating all the great work you do! Today, we’re excited to highlight Lesley, a dedicated foster carer who has been with us for an incredible 20 years. Her journey is a testament to the impact of fostering and the difference one person can make in the lives of children and young people.

What type of fostering do you do?

I provide all types of fostering for children aged 0 to 18 years.

Why did you choose this type of fostering?

My work colleague and her husband were foster carers with the agency, which was then known as Pathway Care. They inspired me to get involved.

Why did you want to become a foster carer?

I wanted to support children and young people, helping to provide positive outcomes in their lives. Making a difference is what drives me.

How long have you been a foster carer?

I have been fostering with Calon Cymru since the days of Pathway Care and this year I am celebrating 20 wonderful.

What did you do before you were a foster carer?

Before fostering, I worked as an area supervisor for Somerfield stores, overseeing 18 locations. I also briefly worked as a carer in the community.

What skills from your career and personal life prepared you for fostering?

My experience working with people and children of all ages has been invaluable. Growing up, my mum was a single carer for myself and my six siblings, which gave me a wealth of knowledge and life experiences to share.

Why did you choose to foster with Calon Cymru?

As previously mentioned, I chose Calon Cymru because of the positive influence my work colleague had on me. Also I was endeared to Calon from the start because I liked Barry, who came to meet me and undertake my initial home visit.

What is your favourite thing about fostering?

I wear different hats and wake up every morning and look forward to what the day is going to bring for the children and young people I care for and have cared for.

What training and support do you receive from Calon Cymru?

I enjoy the training provided at the office and appreciate the excellent support from the agency. I also attend support groups and was instrumental in introducing the “buddy” scheme a few years ago.

Would you recommend Calon Cymru Fostering?

Absolutely! I always recommend the agency, and I’ve referred friends and family who have gone on to foster with us. Two of them continue to foster with Calon.

If you could give advice to someone interested in becoming a foster carer, what would it be?

Be yourself, take your time, and be open, honest, and reliable. Fostering is the best thing I’ve ever done. It's hard but incredibly rewarding as every child or young person is unique.

Would you recommend a career in fostering?

Yes, without a doubt.

Is there anything else you’d like to say or any stories from your fostering career that you’d like to share?

I have many stories, but one that stands out is when I cared for a young girl who came to me at 14. Initially, she didn’t want to engage, but as time passed, she opened up and became part of the family. When she became pregnant at 17, I was there to support her during the birth, and I cared for her baby while she attended college.

We’re incredibly grateful to Lesley for sharing her inspiring story and for her unwavering commitment to fostering. If you think you could change lives just like Lesley, make an enquiry below.
