Step 1 - Speak with us

One of our fostering advisers will call you for a relaxed and informal conversation. We’ll get to know you a little bit more, talk through your questions and you can find out why fostering with Calon Cymru Fostering is a great option.

Step 2 - Home visit

Once you are ready, we can arrange a time to come to your home and discuss fostering in more detail. We will be sure to answer any additional questions you may have.

Step 3 - Application form

If you and the social worker both agree that fostering is the right choice for you and you are ready to proceed, you will then be asked to fill out an application form.

An assessor and a buddy who is an experienced foster carer will both be assigned to help you through the process in addition to the Calon Cymru Fostering team, who will be on hand to always support you.

Step 4 - Checks and references

The following steps in the process will involve the fostering assessment. This might take a few months, but there is nothing to worry about since we will be here to support you throughout. After your application is submitted, we will do the required background checks and obtain references. This is an essential part of protecting and safeguarding the children.

Step 5 - Get to know you

At this point, your assessor will spend time learning about your background, the hobbies and interests you and your family have, and all the strengths and fantastic qualities you will bring to the foster carer role. Our fostering advisors will have a friendly conversation with you to learn more about you and answer any queries you have

Step 6 - Skills To Foster training

You will have the opportunity to take part in a Skills to Foster course, as part of a comprehensive training and development program offered by Calon Cymru Fostering. You will join other potential carers in a dynamic course that will equip you with the abilities and understanding you need to navigate your fostering journey.

Step 7 - Panel interview

You've put in a lot of effort and are close to the end of the process. We'll ensure you feel ready for your interview with those in charge. The Calon Cymru Fostering agency decision marker will make the ultimate determination of whether you will be approved as a foster carer.

Step 8 - Start your fostering journey

After approval, your social worker and placement team will match you with a child or young person who needs you. Keep in mind that this experience will bring great reward and be life-changing for both you and the children you help.

Common Questions

One of our team members will come to your home for an informal discussion about caring for vulnerable children and young people. We'll talk about the process of becoming a foster carer, recommend books and research, and talk about your responsibilities as a foster carer.

We carefully match children with foster carers. We will gain an idea of what will work for you and your home during the assessment process, which will assist us in making appropriate matches.

Yes. The matching process is important for both you and the child or young person who has been referred to us. We carefully match your personalities, talents, and situations with the child or young person's. During your examination, we will thoroughly discuss this with you.

We prefer foster carers to be flexible about age groups since it gives them more opportunities to care for youngsters. We advise foster carers to focus on the child's needs rather than their age when deciding whether or not to support them.
