From Fostering to the Palace: Phillipa’s Unforgettable Day at the Royal Garden Party

At Calon Cymru Fostering, we know that foster carers are everyday heroes, so we were thrilled to see one of our own heroes get the royal treatment she deserves.

On May 20th, 2025, one of our dedicated carers, Phillipa, had the incredible honour of attending the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, recognising her twenty years of fostering with Calon Cymru, which she celebrated in January.

A Well-Earned Nomination

Phillipa was nominated by her long-time friend and Primary Care Support Worker, Kathryn Thomas, who has witnessed first-hand Phillipa’s unwavering commitment to children and young people. Her nomination was supported by a touching endorsement from Calon Cymru’s very own Sharon Cavaliere with both women highlighting the impact Phillipa has made in so many lives over the years.

When the invitation arrived on March 1st, Phillipa initially mistook it for a training notice in Pembrokeshire. A second glance revealed it was no ordinary invitation! It had come via the Lord Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire, officially inviting her to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

Perfection at the palace

With travel and accommodation quickly arranged and the search for the perfect outfit underway, Phillipa began preparing for what she described as a “truly remarkable” day. And it certainly lived up to expectations.

The day was filled with memorable moments, including meeting wonderful guests from all walks of life, enjoying a delicious afternoon tea handmade in the palace kitchens, and catching glimpses of royalty. Amongst the royals in attendance were The Prince and Princess of Wales (William and Kate), Prince Edward and Sophie, Lady Louise, and Zara Tindall.

After tea, attendees were invited to explore the Palace gardens. Phillipa was especially moved by the rose gardens, which were in full bloom. A serene, colourful end to a day she described as "beautiful, emotional and unforgettable."

A Surprise Reunion

As if the day wasn’t special enough, Kathryn had arranged a surprise that touched Phillipa’s heart deeply. During her time working for the local authority, Phillipa had supported a 16-year-old boy named Lee, who had been disowned by his family. She helped him settle into supported lodgings and later secured funding to buy him his first piano. This turned out to be a pivotal moment in his life.

Fast forward to today: Lee is now a successful piano teacher based in London, who has even worked with extended members of the Royal Family. The reunion between the two was emotional and uplifting. It was a full-circle moment that reflected the long-lasting impact of Phillipa’s care and kindness.

A Royal Acknowledgement

Phillipa’s experience at the Royal Garden Party is more than just a celebration of one person, it’s a powerful reminder of the incredible difference foster carers make in the lives of young people every single day.

At Calon Cymru, we couldn’t be prouder of Phillipa and the dedication she’s shown over two decades. Her story is a shining example of how fostering transforms not just the lives of children, but the carers themselves.

To Phillipa, thank you.

And to all of our carers, your compassion, strength, and generosity does not go unnoticed.
