As a fostering agency committed to supporting children, young people and families across Wales, we understand the important role that local communities play in helping young people grow, develop and thrive.

That’s why we’re delighted to be partnering with Newbridge Rugby Club, one of the oldest rugby clubs in Wales, to support one of its young players throughout the 2026/27 season.

Supporting the next generation of Welsh rugby

Established in 1888, Newbridge Rugby Club has a long and proud sporting history. Over the years, the club has been home to many talented players and rugby legends, including Don Hayward, Paul Turner and Derek Morgan.

For Calon, being able to play a small part in the development of the next generation of Welsh rugby talent is a real privilege.

Scott Ruddock, Director of Calon Cymru Fostering, said: “Calon Cymru are delighted to be able to sponsor one of Newbridge Rugby Club’s young players.

"Newbridge has a proud sporting history and at Calon we are so happy to be able to help invest in the next generation of Welsh rugby talent.”

Why grassroots sport matters

Rugby is about much more than what happens on the pitch. Across Wales, local sports clubs provide young people with opportunities to make friends, become part of a team and develop skills that can support them throughout their lives.

Being part of a team can help young people build confidence, resilience, communication skills and a sense of belonging. It can also give them opportunities to set goals, overcome challenges and celebrate their achievements.

These are qualities that we see as incredibly important when supporting children and young people through foster care.

At Calon, we believe that every young person should have opportunities to discover their interests, develop their confidence and reach their potential. Supporting grassroots youth sport is one way we can help make those opportunities available within our local communities.

Investing in Welsh communities

Our partnership with Newbridge Rugby Club reflects Calon’s wider commitment to supporting the communities in which we work.

Fostering is fundamentally about community. Foster carers provide children and young people with a safe, supportive home environment, while schools, sports clubs, friends, family members and other local organisations can all play an important role in helping them feel connected and supported.

By supporting organisations such as Newbridge Rugby Club, we hope to contribute to the strong community networks that help young people flourish.

We’re looking forward to following our sponsored player throughout the 2026/27 season and celebrating their progress on and off the pitch.
