Parent and Child Fostering with Calon Cymru

In Parent and Child fostering, foster carers open their homes to a parent (or parents) and their child (or children). This type of fostering focuses on providing a safe and supportive environment, where the parent can learn how to look after their baby safely, whilst growing their parenting skills. Foster carers play a crucial role in supervising, mentoring, and guiding the parent(s), ensuring that they can care for their child effectively.
The journey of parenthood can be overwhelming, and many new parents may face various challenges, including mental health issues, lack of support, or difficulties in managing their parenting responsibilities. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, foster carers can help parents build confidence, develop skills, and create a positive bond with their child.
We are dedicated to offering our foster carers 24/7 support and comprehensive training. We understand that the role of a foster carer can be demanding, which is why we strive to create a robust support network. Louise Rees, our Parent and Child Service Manager explains a little more about some of the training we offer to our Parent and Child foster carers:
“Training will cover policies and processes that parents and social work professionals follow, for example, the Public Law Outline process; observing, reporting, and recording; risk assessing and safe care. It will also cover and relate to the identified difficulties that parents face: perinatal mental health, substance misuse, learning disabilities, and domestic abuse. At Calon Cymru, we have an accredited facilitator who can deliver domestic abuse training bespoke to our mothers in the foster home. If required, we are also able to complete a parenting assessment for a Local Authority.”
Foster carers Sharon and Lloyd have shared their experiences of parent and child fostering with Calon Cymru. They highlight the learning curve that foster carers experience, but also explain how rewarding it can be to support a parent or parents in their journey.
“It’s important to keep an open mind and expect the unexpected, you will have days where you are celebrating victories, there will be days when you just want to cry, and there will be days when you are so proud that you will just want to explode.”
