It offers many benefits and can set the tone for a supportive partnership, that will ultimately help vulnerable children and young people thrive in a nurturing environment.
An initial home visit is an informal meeting between prospective foster carers and a member of our team, usually Recruitment Manager, Barrie Lewis (pictured). The visit typically occurs after you have enquired to foster with us, and spoken on the phone with our Fostering Advisor, Tracey.
The Initial Home Visit has several benefits. It is likely that it will be your first time meeting someone from Calon Cymru, so is a great opportunity to establish a trusting relationship with us. It’s essential for you to feel comfortable and supported as you embark on the journey to become a foster carer.
The visit also offers us an opportunity to explain the assessment process to become a foster carer, so you know what to expect over the coming months. We will also explain what life as a foster carer will look like, as well as assessing your home environment to ensure it is safe and suitable for fostering.
It is also likely that you have lots of questions for us, so it will give you the chance to ask about anything fostering related – there is no silly question! You can also discuss any concerns you may have, or disclose sensitive information, in the knowledge that it will be treated with respect and confidentiality.
After the visit, if we both agree that it is the right path for you, you’ll move forward with the fostering assessment, where more detailed evaluations will take place.
To make the most of your initial home visit, consider the following tips:
Think about what you want to know. This could include details about the training process, support from the agency, or the experiences of other foster carers.
While it’s not necessary to have a perfectly tidy home, a welcoming atmosphere can help make a positive impression.
Tell us about your life experiences – both good and bad, and share your thoughts and feelings about fostering candidly. We are there to assist you, and appreciate your honesty.
The initial home visit is a crucial step in your fostering journey with Calon Cymru Fostering. It not only serves as an introduction to the fostering process but also allows you to establish a supportive and honest relationship with us. There is nothing to worry about regarding the visit, first and foremost, it’s an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little bit better in a relaxed and informal environment!
