Fostering in Caerphilly

Foster care in Caerphilly

Are you thinking of fostering a child or a young person in Caerphilly?

Located in Southeast Wales, with farming and livestock husbandry being the historical way of life in and around the county, Caerphilly is a place where rural life meets the peace and quiet of the Welsh countryside. An area which is built on the foundations of solid community spirit, for those children who are lucky enough to grow up in Caerphilly, the access to surrounding towns and cities means that diverse experiences are within easy travelling distance while still affording them the luxury of wide open spaces at home.

For the many children who pass through Caerphilly and the surrounding rural landscape of Wales as part of their fostering journey, it is this very environment which enables them to take a step back from their often chaotic lives and instead spend time getting to know who they want to become. With 89 schools in and around the county borough of Caerphilly, including primary and secondary and one specialist education facility, Caerphilly combines history with culture and memorable experiences – and is somewhere where children and young people from all backgrounds can feel safe, supported, and welcomed with open arms by the local community.

When you become a foster carer in Caerphilly, you open your home to young people who may be unfamiliar with the most basic caring attributes and surroundings. With a slower pace of life compared with some of the big cities and more industrial areas of Wales, Caerphilly is an ideal place in which to offer support, guidance, and a loving home to children of all ages who have faced a challenging start to life.

In March 2021 there were approximately 5,070 children living in foster care across Wales, with 3,800 foster families in and around the rural and more industrial landscape of Wales. And these numbers are showing no signs of slowing, with the demand and need for foster carers growing at a consistent rate.

Could you transform the life of a young person, with the ongoing support and aid of the Calon Cymru Fostering team?

This is Yvonne and Brian’s story.

For Yvonne and Brian, fostering is about recognising the individual and unique perspectives, fears, and attributes of each child they take in – no matter how long term the placement may be.

To do this, and to celebrate every foster placement they have had over the last 18 years with Calon Cymru Fostering, Yvonne and Brian have a ‘Family Tree’ in their home every Christmas – giving the children in their care the chance to choose or make a decoration which is theirs to add to the tree. By creating an ongoing tradition which unites their placements both past, present, and future, young people are allowed to feel like a part of something magical – and the couple have a beautiful way of celebrating every child who has walked through their door.
