Celebrating 20 Years of Fostering: John & Jennifer’s Remarkable Journey

Recently, we were thrilled to celebrate John and Jennifer’s 20th anniversary as foster carers with Calon Cymru Fostering. Over the past two decades, John and Jennifer have opened their hearts and home to children who needed stability, compassion, and care.

We wanted to see what 20 years of fostering looked like for them, to reflect on their experiences, challenges, and the incredible rewards that come with fostering.

What type of Fostering do you do and why? :

We do long-term fostering, but we wouldn’t say set out to do long-term fostering, it just naturally progressed that way.

Why did you want to become a foster carer?

We became foster carers because we wanted to make a difference in at least one child’s life, no matter how long that difference might last.

How long have you been a foster carer?

We’ve been fostering for 20 years.

What did you do before you were foster carers, and were there any transferable skills?

Before fostering, we worked as electrical retailers. It was a very different line of work, but the skills we used there have been valuable to a career in foster care. It taught us a lot about communication, patience, and dealing with a wide range of people, which has helped us when making children feel welcome, valued, and confident enough to ask questions or express themselves.

Why did you choose to foster with Calon Cymru?

When we first considered fostering, we weren’t sure which agency to choose. But when Barry came to visit and explained the kind of support Pathway (now Calon Cymru) could provide, we didn’t need to look any further.

What is your favourite thing about fostering?

Our favourite thing about fostering is seeing a child relax enough to laugh. That moment when their guard drops and they start to feel at home is incredibly rewarding.

What training and support do you receive from Calon Cymru?

The training provided by Calon Cymru is excellent. It is always relevant, informative, and delivered in a friendly, approachable way. The support is available 24/7, and it’s both understanding and completely non-judgemental. Knowing there’s always someone to turn to makes such a difference.

Would you recommend Calon Cymru Fostering?

Yes, absolutely!

If you could give advice to someone interested in becoming a foster carer, what would it be?

Be prepared for changes to your everyday life but know that you can be the person who can make a difference for a child who needs someone to help them grow in the right way.

Would you recommend a career in fostering?

Yes, definitely. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding path. However, it’s important to understand that placements aren’t always continuous, so having a financial backup plan is wise. It’s a calling of the heart, but being practical helps too.

Is there anything else you’d like to share from your fostering journey?

If anyone wonders whether they can make a difference, don’t wait, just do it!

When a child smiles at you for the first time, your heart will sing. Believe it.
