Walking for a Cause: Emma's Journey in the Macmillan Mighty Hike

When Sessional Support Worker Emma reached out to us about her Macmillan Mighty Hike challenge we were privileged to be able to support her and the cause. Following the loss of both parents to cancer, Emma is now taking the opportunity to help raise awareness. Here is Emma's story!

Hello, I'm Emma, a sessional support worker with Calon Cymru Fostering. In July, I embarked on an incredible journey, completing the Macmillan Mighty Hike, a full marathon of over 26 miles of walking in just one day! This experience was not only a personal challenge but also a heartfelt tribute to my parents.

The Motivation Behind the Hike

The decision to take part in the Mighty Hike was deeply personal. My parents were foster carers for many years, providing love and support to countless children in need. Sadly, we lost them both to cancer, which makes Macmillan Cancer Support a charity that holds immense significance for my family. I wanted to honour their legacy and contribute to the invaluable work that Macmillan does for those affected by cancer. By joining this event, I hoped to raise funds that would help others facing similar challenges.

Preparing for the Challenge

Training required dedication, and resilience. I found myself reflecting on the memories of my parents, which motivated me to keep going. The thought of raising money for Macmillan kept me going. I knew I was not just walking for myself but for those who needed support during their toughest times.

The Big Day

The day of the Mighty Hike arrived, and the atmosphere was electric. The event brought together hundreds of participants, all united for the same cause. As we set off on our journey, the excitement was palpable. We walked through picturesque landscapes, with stunning views that made each step worthwhile.

Despite the overwhelming positivity, the hike was not without challenges. The last few miles were particularly tough. The terrain was more hilly than we anticipated, and fatigue started to set in. However, the encouragement from supporters and other participants along the route provided a much-needed boost. It was inspiring to see so many people coming together for a common goal.
